Sharifah Emalia Al-Gadrie is an artist and community development worker based in Nipaluna/Hobart. She has a background in comparative literary studies and centres her multidisciplinary practice around themes including belonging, identity and heritage. She also has a collaborative practice with Tilley Wood, which is based in performance and installation work.
This piece is a thematic and visual evolution of an earlier piece by a similar name. It is an abstracted exploration of connection and disconnection between people and place, alluding to the tension of mediating heritage and identity. My current body of work riffs on a colour palette that references the colours of the Australian flag to echo the dissonance of a personal Australian identity which includes a diverse cultural heritage.
