At the Eastern end of our 2nd floor corridor, we stand by the water’s edge of where the first tall ships to lutruwita Tasmania produced gathered stone with midden mortar. The Hunter Street Precinct as home to The Henry Jones Art Hotel no longer resembles the small island it once was for thousands of years.

Through the hypnotic art of Nikala Bourke, photographic tracings of tidal patterns and marks, we are transported back as though we are journeying a visual map of times long passed. Bourke’s body of work ‘ The Pull of Water ’ aims to remind audiences of the fundamental connections that we all have with the elements. Responding to the ebb and flow of water in Browns River, Kingston, Nikala has developed a technique that submerges large, hand-cut sheets of light-sensitive, black and white photographic paper directly under its currents.

Jackson is a contemporary artist who has nurtured her vibrant and dynamic painting style for over 30 years. Her work often encompassing layers of vibrant colour and texture, as she renders visual stories in bold and expressive strokes. Persistence, humour, community, family, and friendships are the important elements that inspire and drive her commitment as a visual artist. Jackson regularly gathers a collaborative community of friends and artists for art workshops in her studio, which contribute to her artistic practice. Throughout Judy’s thirty-year career she has consistently developed and refined her technique which is evident in the high-quality work she exhibits.

The first floor of the Henry Jones Art Hotel is welcoming a number of new works including another Henry Jones Art Prize finalist, Dane Chisholm. A palawa man, Chisholm is inspired by the wonder of country and it’s ability to traverse the dreamscape and re-form into his own imaginings.

Chisholm says “ This work is about an experience of floating through an imaginary whimsical lush botanical world. Plants crisscrossing each other, sprouting here there, and everywhere. Nature creating chaos, with plant life awakening from quiet earth. We live on a wildly covered and chaotic island, full of rich diverse plant life that has lived here for thousands and thousands of years and in the end, if we fail as humans, plant life will still hopefully continue. The work is about the untouched having space to grow and the possibility of enjoyment of being in nature. A whimsical environment to escape to and dream about.”

Moroney says “ As the new day dawns, light falls across the paddocks revealing a land that has been worked extensively for many years. Cultivated paddocks and rows of European trees cover the Midland landscape, all that can be heard is the occasional Ewe calling her lambs and the laugh of the Kookaburras. The day ahead will be good.”
