Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum 

Hobart honours Hobart’s Antarctic Gateway status with a museum of Mawson’s Huts right there at Franklin Wharf, open 10-5 pm most days.

Parliament House Hobart Tours 

Between the harbourfront and Salamanca Market sits the grand Parliament House at 1 Salamanca Place, Hobart. Daily tours are 9.30am and 2.30pm on non-sitting days, but public tours aren’t held when large tour groups go through. Call 03 6212 2200 if you want to check if tours are on.

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is ‘a combined museum, art gallery and herbarium which safeguards the physical evidence of Tasmania’s natural and cultural heritage.’

From the TMAG website: 

“The TMAG precinct is one of Australia’s most historically significant sites.  Included in the precinct is Tasmania’s oldest surviving public building, the 1808-10 Commissariat Store; the Private Secretary’s Cottage, built prior to 1815 and originally adjacent to the old Government House; and Tasmania’s first federal building, the 1902 Custom House.”

The Maritime Museum of Tasmania has a significant permanent exhibition covering everything from indigenous watercraft to documents on whaling and global trade. There are also shipwrecks and documents of the Tasman Bridge disaster of 1975, when a bulk carrier took out the bridge, causing 12 deaths.

Salamanca Market

One of the first stops you should make on your Hobart adventure is Salamanca Place. This historic area is famous for its vibrant atmosphere and rich cultural experiences.

Classic Red Decker Tours

For mindless floating about, Red Decker, The Official Sightseeing Tour Of Hobart, sells 24 and 48-hour tickets. This is one of the best things to do in Hobart without a car, a convenient way to see the sights.

Its cornerstone stop is conveniently located at the Visitor Information Centre/ Lark Distillery site at Davey Street, Hobart. One of the bus loops also passes the landmark Wrest Point Hotel & Casino in Sandy Bay. This is a 6-minute drive south along the bay from the harbour.

The Red Decker also does combination tickets that include tours to Zoodoo Zoo, for that all-important Tasmanian Devil sighting. 

Other optional Red Decker add-ons include trips up Mount Wellington and to Richmond, Tasmania to see the Richmond Bridge, heritage-registered as Australia’s oldest bridge.
